Are you going to take a diving course, go to a riding camp, rent a canoe or go on a glacier hike with an instructor? Those who arrange such services must comply with regulations that will ensure your safety. Nevertheless, you yourself have a responsibility for what you embark on.
Avoid injury
You have a responsibility to avoid injury. It is you who must assess whether the safety of the activity looks good enough. Ask yourself if you have the right conditions to participate and answer honestly.
Has great confidence in the organizer
Most people assume that security has been taken care of in a proper way. Many also believe that the organizers are prepared, if something should happen. The younger the people, the higher their trust in the organizers. This is shown by a survey conducted by the Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB).
Not always easy to save you
The authorities have rescue preparedness, but remember that rescue teams cannot always arrive quickly - especially not if you are going to be active far from the beaten track, in rough terrain or in difficult weather conditions. Sometimes the rescue teams also have to make sure that they themselves are not exposed to danger.
Report dangerous activity
Have you experienced an organizer who has not taken their responsibility seriously, or have you experienced that the activity was directly dangerous? Report it, so that others do not experience the same thing.
Checklist before start:
- Do you have enough knowledge to carry out the activity safely?
- Have you received the necessary guidance and training in how the activity should be carried out?
- Does the organizer have a qualified person present who can provide advice and guidance along the way?
- Is there a need to wear personal protective equipment such as a helmet, diving mask or climbing equipment? Do you have this equipment and have you been trained in how to use it?
- Does the organizer give the impression of taking safety seriously?
- Do you know enough about the risks and safety of the activity? If not, ask more questions.
