These substances are prohibited for private individuals

Some fabrics and common products can be used to make homemade bombs. The EU has therefore decided that the supply of such substances should be limited. Here are the substances you as a private individual are not allowed to buy, use or store.

Examples of products

One of the banned substances on the list is strong sulfuric acid. This is typically used for drain cleaning or as a pool chemical. Both for drain cleaning and as a pool chemical, there are good alternative products for private individuals.

Another substance that is banned is strong hydrogen peroxide. This is typically used by hunters for bleaching skull trophies, or for bleaching wood paneling. A good option for bleaching hunting trophies is to use a weaker hydrogen peroxide (12%), but leave the trophy for longer.

Fuel with nitromethane, which is used for example in radio-controlled cars and model aircraft, is also on the list. The same goes for some fertilizer products.

The list of prohibited substances is a total of nine products (see fact box). The ban also applies to products containing the aforementioned substances above the given concentration limit.

If you have a substance or product that is prohibited

If you store any of the substances mentioned above or a product containing more than the permitted amount of the substances on the list, you should take this product to your local waste disposal centre as soon as possible. It costs nothing.

Not allowed to bring from abroad

In some other countries in the European Union, it is possible to obtain a license to buy. If you as a private individual have a license to purchase the prohibited substances or products from another country, this is not valid in Norway. The prohibition on buying, storing and using applies. It is also not allowed to order such products online.

Report suspicious use or storage

If you as a private individual discover something you think is suspicious use or storage of these substances, you can report it to the National Criminal Investigation Service or call the National Contact Point at the National Criminal Investigation Service on telephone +47 23 20 80 10.
