Asbestos removal: Don't do it yourself - get help from professionals

Asbestos is hazardous to health. If you notice it in your home, it's important that you handle it properly.

Private individuals can remediate asbestos outdoors, but it is not recommended to do remediation indoors yourself. DSB's recommendation is that in both cases you get help from professionals - it is the safest.

What is asbestos?

Asbestos was previously used in a number of building materials, especially in houses from 1920 until it was banned in Norway in 1985. It was used because it is heat-resistant and durable – but it has a serious downside: Asbestos dust can damage the lungs and cause cancer.

When asbestos-containing materials break up, small fibres can be released and float in the air. These sharp fibers can penetrate deep into the lungs. The damage does not occur immediately, but can develop over time – and be life-threatening.

Our clear recommendation: Use professionals

If you suspect that there is asbestos in your home – for example, in wall panels, ceilings, pipe insulation or floor coverings – do not try to remove it yourself. It is a job for professionals with the right skills and equipment.

Professional actors who handle asbestos are subject to the Labour Inspection Authority's regulations and know how to do this safely. They have special equipment and routines that protect both themselves and their surroundings.

If you still choose to do it yourself

DSB strongly recommends that you do not handle asbestos yourself. If you do choose to do so, it's crucial that you protect yourself properly:

  • Wear approved respiratory protection suitable for asbestos work.
  • Wear full-coverage protective clothing that prevents fibers from coming into contact with the skin.
  • Read and understand the information on the protective equipment carefully to ensure that the product is suitable for your use.
