Gas hoses or plumbed-in system
As an unskilled worker, you are only allowed to fit a gas hose up to 1.5 metres long, with a regulator between a propane bottle and a gas appliance, such as a stove or a barbecue. You are not allowed to run a gas hose through walls. If you need to run gas through walls, it must be fed through a properly installed pipe, and this must be left to the professionals. This applies to gas pipes of every type.
If the gas appliance has a shut-off valve, gas pipes, tanks or evaporators, again, you must leave the job to the professionals.
Gas detectors and alarms
You are allowed to install gas detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, provided that these have batteries or will be plugged into a socket. Remember to check the user instructions to make sure you're installing the detector in the right place. Leak detectors that are fitted to gas pipes must be installed by professionals.
External propane cabinets
You can install external gas storage cabinets yourself. External gas storage cabinets must be made of non-flammable material, such as steel. The gas bottles must be stored in an upright position and must not be able to fall over. The cabinet must be kept locked.
If you intend to store gas outdoors for use in winter, you should choose gas bottles made from steel rather than composite material (lightweight bottles). If your gas consumption is high and the temperature around the bottle is extremely low, this could result in too little gas being fed to the gas appliance.
Which professionals are allowed to help you?
A person who has a certificate as a plumber, industrial plumber, refrigeration technician or equivalent, and who has also completed training and passed an examination for the installation of gaseous fuel installations. Feel free to ask the company if they have this expertise before you agree to get the job done.
